Minister Heurtel to participate in the Climate Summit of the Americas in Mexico

Québec, August 30, 2016 The Minister of Sustainable Development, the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change, David Heurtel, will represent Québec at the 2nd Climate Summit of the Americas, which will take place in Guadalajara (State of Jalisco), Mexico on August 31 and September 1. Aristóles Sandoval Diaz, Governor of Jalisco, will chair the event.

The aim of the Summit, which brings together Pan-American leaders, environmental groups and representatives of industry, is to promote climate change cooperation among the continent’s federated states and regions and build up consensus congruent with the international climate agenda.

In addition to official speeches during the Summit, the Minister will held bilateral meetings with some Latin American governments representatives. These meetings will take place in the spirit of strengthening cooperation with Mexico on climate change and environmental issues, which were also brought up during the recent visit to Québec by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

The Climate Summit of the Americas is among a series of events in which Québec will take part in the run-up to the 22nd Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Marrakech, Morocco, this November. The first Climate Summit of the Americas was held in Toronto and chaired by Ontario Premier and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Kathleen Wynne.
