Land set aside
Granting land set aside status is a prerequisite for the designation of a biodiversity reserve or other type of protected area. Lands set aside are designated by decree of the Cabinet, and their protection is legally binding. The primary objective of this designation is nature conservation. Certain new industrial activities that exploit natural resources are prohibited until an ultimate protection status is granted. Management procedures for land set aside meet international standards for protected areas. Land set aside can therefore be listed in the Register of Protected Areas and OECMs in Québec.
