Minister David Heurtel to stop in Lyon on his way to Paris for the Climate Conference |
Québec City, November 28, 2015 – In conjunction with his trip to France to participate in the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change, David Heurtel, will attend the opening evening of the 28th Entretiens Jacques Cartier on Monday, November 30. The event will run through December 3 in Lyon.
Established in 1987, the Entretiens Jacques Cartier are dedicated to forging partnerships between the City of Lyon, the Rhône-Alpes Region and the Montréal Region. Minister Heurtel will be joined at the event by the chair of the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council, Jean-Jack Queyranne, and the senator and mayor of Lyon and president of the Urban Community of Lyon, Gérard Collomb. “Les Entretiens Jacques Cartier encourage us to reflect on common issues. I am delighted to see that these well-established consultations are increasingly turning toward innovation and the promotion of research and development. These areas are essential at a time when we must find solutions for addressing many issues, including climate change,” said Minister Heurtel.
While in Lyon, the Minister will meet with representatives from various competitiveness clusters with which Québec cooperates and visit institutions active in the renewable energy sector. Additionally, the Minister will engage in discussions with representatives from Québec and Rhône-Alpes companies linked to the environment and sustainable development.
COP21 Minister Heurtel will leave Lyon for Paris on Tuesday, December 1, to participate in COP21. On the eve of his visit to the French capital, the Minister wishes to reiterate the objective that Québec has set for itself, namely ensuring that the voice of federated states and regions is heard. “Federated states such as Québec play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change. That is why it is important to acknowledge on the international scene the essential role of federated states and regions in the fight against climate change. Together, let’s fight against climate change to ensure a quality of life and a healthy planet to our children. Let’s do it for them!,” said the Minister.
Minister Heurtel will participate in a number of events in conjunction with the Paris Climate Conference. He will take the opportunity provided by several forums to assert Québec’s leadership in the fight against climate change, both in Canada and abroad. On Sunday, December 6, the Minister will speak at the 2015 World Climate Summit attended by dozens of economic political and financial leaders. He will also be a panelist during Québec Day at the Francophonie Pavilion on Wednesday, December 9. The event will focus on integrating climate issues into public policies.
