MNA’S FOR VAUDREUIL AND SOULANGES ANNOUNCE AN INVESTMENT OF $ 195 108 FOR THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON GROUNDWATER IN THE REGION OF VAUDREUIL-SOULANGES

Saint-Clet, June 28 2012 – The MNA for Soulanges and Chief Government Whip, Mrs. Lucie Charlebois and the MNA for Vaudreuil and Vice-chair on the Committee on Public administration, Mr. Yvon Marcoux, announced today, on behalf of the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, Mr Pierre Arcand, an investment of $ 195 108 for the realization of a project on groundwater in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region.  This financial aid comes from the Programme d’acquisition de connaissances sur les eaux souterraines (PACES), du Bureau des connaissances sur l’eau.

This project will be carried out through a collaboration between the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and the École Polytechinique de Montréal.  The area covered by the research is 814 km2.  This corresponds to the Quebec portion of the 19 watersheds that drain into the Ottawa, in the Lake of two mountains, the St-Lawrence River and Lake Saint-François. The region has more that 137 000 inhabitants and has had a marked increase of its population in recent years.

« Like all regions, Vaudreuil-Soulanges has its own challenges in environmental matters, including the reconciliation of agricultural activities and the preservation of our precious water resources.  This study will allow us to obtain an accurate picture of the situation to take the best decisions in the best interests of the population», pointed the MNA’S for Soulanges and Vaudreuil.

This project is made possible with the financial participation of the two educational establishments, the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC, the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Council of the watershed the geomatics agency Géomont.

« Because of its abundance in Québec, it has long had the impression that water was somehow an inexhaustible resource.  We now know that it is there and that we must do everything to preserve this precious heritage.  However, the best way to achieve this is to deepen our knowledge in this regard.  It is for this reason that the PACES was created.  Within three years, we will have a clear picture of our groundwater on 80% of municipalities in Southern Québec», indicated Minister Arcand.

About  PACES

The objective of the program is to gain knowledge in the municipalized territories of Québec to ensure a development which will not compromise water necessary for human activities and the integrity of ecosystems.  As the Office of knowledge on water, its mandates are law affirming the collective nature of water resources and to enhance their protection.  The law, enacted in 2009, confirms that the surface water and groundwater are part of the common heritage of the Québec nation and that the State, as custodian of the resource, must be invested with the powers necessary to its protection and management.
