2006–2012 Climate Change Action Plan

Sectoral actions aimed at reducing or avoiding greenhouse gas emissions in Québec

Actions addressing Québec’s adaptation to climate change

Research, development and technology deployment

Measure 20: Implement a program to support technological research and innovation for the reduction and sequestration of greenhouse gas

The Government of Québec intends to finance research, development and technology and innovative process demonstration projects that hold high promise for reducing GHG emissions in Québec. This measure aims particularly at supporting the development of technologies that can reduce or sequester GHG emissions, improve energy efficiency in order to decrease fossil fuel consumption, replace fossil fuel with renewable energy and contribute to the development of Québec companies and job creation in field of green technology.

Demonstration of technology Technoclimat (French)

The objective of this program is to finance demonstration projects for technologies and innovative processes with good potential for reducing GHG emissions in Québec

Research and Development

This component, with a $20 million budget, supports applied research and development projects aimed at GHG reduction and sequestration in Québec. More precisely, it will encourage maturing technology, partnership-based research, publication of research results, formation of sector-by-sector industrial research groupings and formative projects related to valorization and to the transfer of results.

Geological Sequestration of Carbon

Among the solutions noted by the IPCC - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change - to attenuate atmospheric accumulation of CO2, CO2 capture and sequestration technologies are among the most promising. This explains why most developed countries are investing in this area. Setting up a research chair on the geological sequestration of CO2 is the first step towards developing expertise and knowledge on the potential for sequestration in favourable geological formations in Québec.
